We spent six weeks running Perplexity AI and ChatGPT side by side on real research work: literature scans, market sizing, competitor analysis, fact checking news claims and summarising long PDFs. If you are a researcher, analyst, consultant, journalist or any knowledge worker who spends hours each week finding and verifying information, this Perplexity vs ChatGPT comparison is written for you.

Our test set included 120 research prompts split across four categories: current events and fast-changing facts, academic and technical questions, document analysis with uploaded files, and multi-step deep research reports. We scored each tool on citation quality, factual accuracy, depth, speed and how much editing the output needed before we could use it. We tested both the free plans and the $20 per month paid tiers, and we spot-checked the $200 per month plans for heavy users.

Perplexity AI Deep-Dive

#1 for Cited Search

Perplexity AI

Free + $20/mo

Perplexity AI is still the fastest way we know to go from a question to a set of credible sources. Type a query and it searches the live web, reads the top results and writes a concise answer with numbered inline citations. In our current-events tests, Perplexity returned a usable, sourced answer in an average of 6 seconds, and 91% of its citations actually supported the sentence they were attached to. That traceability is the main reason researchers choose it: you never have to guess where a claim came from.

Where Perplexity really earns its place is source discovery. The Academic focus pulls from scholarly databases and returned peer-reviewed papers for 18 of our 20 technical questions, while the Finance mode surfaces filings, earnings data and price charts. For a market sizing task on European heat pump adoption, Perplexity found three industry reports and a government dataset in one query that took us 20 minutes to locate manually. Research mode (formerly Deep Research) runs dozens of searches and produces a multi-section report in 2 to 4 minutes, which is ideal for a first-pass overview before a meeting.

Spaces let you group threads, upload reference files and set custom instructions per project, which works well for ongoing literature reviews. Pro subscribers can switch between Perplexity's own Sonar model and frontier models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, so you get multiple perspectives without paying for multiple subscriptions. The free Comet browser adds an assistant that can summarise tabs and compare pages you have open.

The weaknesses show up once you move past search. Perplexity's answers are deliberately compact, and its Research reports read more like annotated source lists than argued analyses. When we uploaded a 90-page clinical trial PDF and a 40,000-row CSV, it summarised the PDF well but struggled to run meaningful analysis on the spreadsheet. It also occasionally leans on low-quality SEO pages when authoritative sources are thin, so source checking is still on you.

Pricing in 2026: the Free plan gives unlimited basic searches plus a small daily allowance of Pro searches and Research runs. Pro at $20/mo (or $200/year) unlocks hundreds of Pro searches per day, model selection, more Research and Labs runs, and larger file uploads. Max at $200/mo adds unlimited Labs and Research, early access to new models and priority support. Enterprise Pro starts at $40 per user per month with admin controls and data retention guarantees.

Pros
  • Inline citations on every answer make verification fast
  • Academic, Finance and Social focus modes for targeted sourcing
  • Generous free plan with unlimited basic searches
  • Access to GPT, Claude and Gemini models in one Pro subscription
  • Research reports in minutes, not tens of minutes
Cons
  • Weaker at data analysis and complex spreadsheet work
  • Reports are shallow on argument and synthesis
  • Sometimes cites low-authority websites
  • Writing and editing tools lag well behind ChatGPT

ChatGPT Deep-Dive

#1 for Analysis and Synthesis

ChatGPT

Free + $8 to $200/mo

ChatGPT started as a chatbot and has grown into a full research workbench. With search enabled, it now handles current facts nearly as well as Perplexity: in our current-events set it was correct on 88% of prompts versus Perplexity's 92%. The gap is in citation discipline. ChatGPT cites sources at the end of paragraphs or in a source panel, and in longer answers we found more sentences with no clear attribution.

Where ChatGPT pulls ahead is everything that happens after you find information. Its deep research feature takes longer, often 10 to 25 minutes, but the reports are noticeably better: clearer structure, explicit trade-offs, conflicting evidence called out and a stronger executive summary. On our competitor analysis brief for a B2B SaaS company, ChatGPT's report needed about half the editing of Perplexity's before we would send it to a client. For academic-style questions, the GPT-5 reasoning models explained methodology and limitations of studies more thoroughly.

Document and data work is ChatGPT's biggest advantage. Upload PDFs, Word files or spreadsheets and it can cross-reference them, extract tables and run Python-based data analysis to produce charts and statistics. The same 40,000-row CSV that tripped up Perplexity was cleaned, segmented and charted by ChatGPT in under three minutes. Projects keep files, chats and instructions together, and memory means it remembers your field, preferred citation style and ongoing work across sessions. Canvas turns research into a draft you can edit section by section, and agent mode can browse sites, fill forms and compile information for you.

The downsides: you are limited to OpenAI's models, source filtering is minimal compared with Perplexity's focus modes, and without search switched on it can still state outdated or invented facts confidently. The free plan also hits usage caps quickly during heavy research sessions.

Pricing in 2026: the Free plan includes GPT-5 with usage limits, search and a handful of deep research runs per month. Go at $8/mo raises message, upload and image limits. Plus at $20/mo adds higher limits, reasoning models, more deep research, agent mode and Projects with larger file capacity. Pro at $200/mo gives near-unlimited access, the most capable reasoning models and the highest deep research allowance. Business costs roughly $25 to $30 per user per month with workspace admin and no training on your data, and Enterprise is custom priced.

Pros
  • Best-in-class deep research reports with real analysis
  • Powerful file, spreadsheet and data analysis
  • Memory and Projects support long-running research
  • Canvas makes turning findings into documents easy
  • Agent mode automates multi-step web tasks
Cons
  • Citations are less consistent than Perplexity's
  • Deep research is slow for quick questions
  • No choice of non-OpenAI models
  • Free plan caps arrive fast during heavy use

When to Choose Perplexity AI

Choose Perplexity AI when the core of your work is finding and verifying information quickly. It is the better fit if you:

In practice, we found Perplexity replaced roughly 70% of our Google searches during the test period, simply because it got us to the right source faster.

When to Choose ChatGPT

Choose ChatGPT when research is only the first step and you need to analyse, synthesise and produce something. It is the better fit if you:

If you only pay for one AI tool and your job involves writing, coding or data work alongside research, ChatGPT Plus delivers more total value per dollar.

Verdict: Perplexity vs ChatGPT for Research

For pure research, meaning finding accurate, current and verifiable information, Perplexity AI wins. Its citation-first design, academic and finance focus modes and fast Research reports make it the most efficient discovery tool we tested, and its free plan is the best entry point for anyone on a budget.

For research that ends in analysis or a deliverable, ChatGPT wins. Its deep research reports are more insightful, its data analysis is in a different league and Canvas plus Projects make it a true end-to-end workspace.

Our recommendation for most knowledge workers: start with Perplexity Free plus ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo). Use Perplexity to find and verify sources, then bring the best material into ChatGPT to analyse and write. If you can only afford one subscription, pick Perplexity Pro if most of your day is searching and fact checking, and ChatGPT Plus if most of your day is turning information into documents, decisions or data insights.
